[AusNOG] Multi-Mode vs. Single-Mode in DC's

Aside from the technology, I have heard comments that it is preferable to use SM in DCs for inter-rack connectivity so that people can't track a cable path because it's the only orange one amongst a sea of yellow cables. We tend to use SM in the majority of cases simply because we generally don't have to worry about distance limitations, we can just swap out the optics to suit the requirement.

MMF only for things such as SAN deployments or interconnections between things in the same cabinet or cage.

Anything out of the cabinet or cage always SMOF, it's just easier that way.

Hi all,

I wanted to put a question to the community to help some University researchers.

They are wanting to know how much, in DC's particularly people rollout MMF vs. SMF

They're working on a technology to extend the capacity of Multi-Mode, to the speeds of Single-Mode - and want to know if there is a market for it.

My gut however was that for a while, not many people bother rolling out MMF as the costs are rather similar when you compare it against comparable features.

I for one haven't rolled out almost any MMF for a few years now, and I was wondering if that was similar for most others here.

Thanks all for any feedback - on or off-list.

PS... If anyone is into Virtual Reality, IoT, Wearables, etc... there is an event in Sydney tonight called Convergence (http://convergence.events/). If you are interested, register @ http://convergence.events/register and use theCode "Conv2 FinalVIP". See you there if you can come.
