[AusNOG] Yay, internet censorship legislation this week too.

I find a paragraph in the article quirky.

"The power will only apply to websites outside Australia as rights holders are not prevented from taking direct action against websites operated within Australia," the Government said at the time.

Let's say Hulu in the US has the exclusive rights for a TV show 2 years before Foxtel does. What in this legislation will prevent Foxtel requesting Hulu be blocked to stop Australians using DNS-based avoidance of Geoblocks to watch said show? Since the internet-accessible content infringes on Foxtel's local rights agreement? And would said DNS-based avoidance, just get around the block anyway?

Maybe the example is a bit farfetched, but it's not unheard of companies going to great lengths...

Seems like this legislation is just like the metadata retention bill. An expensive, easily bypassed, solution to a problem that doesn't need to be solved through legislation in the first place....

This week clearly is 'war on the internet week' by the Coalition.

Regards,

Greg

Hey, yo!

http://www.itnews.com.au/News/401763,brandis-to-introduce-site-blocking-legislation-this-week.aspx

You folks must have had loads of practice at teaming up to eviscerate stupid government policies by now, what with all the stuff that's going on lately.

So this one should be an absolute push-over. No probs, right?
