The Shield Law stuff passed a few years back defines:

journalist means a person who is engaged and active in the publication of news and who may be given information by an informant in the expectation that the information may be published in a news medium.

But they're free to define the term however they like for this law, in this law.

Apparently journalist is defined in legislation somewhere.

This afternoon the Law Institute of Victoria came out and called for Lawyers to be protected by the same sort of warrant system, to protect attorney-client confidentiality.
