[AusNOG] Hybrid Audio Controller

You can always run a new desk as primary and the existing old desk as your backup. Only 1 investment but new technology that does everything.

It doesn’t have to be Wheatstone, although I think they are probably the best in the marketplace right now - I have run plain Jane mixers for years and they work fine on FM and digital.

Telephony is one of those things that you need to do right because phone calls sound crap to start, so anything you can do to hold the quality will really shine.

The good news is that 4G really ads clarity to the audio on a mobile handset and in some cases we have been able to route telephony audio that sounds *very close* to someone in the same room.

The JK Audio stuff will allow you to take the output from a Cisco IP handset or even an iPhone/Samsung handset and push it through a console with half decent sound quality.

Good luck.

HI Darren,

Thanks for the information, The owner of the station wont even consider digital desks as there is too much to go wrong. The desk he is using he refers to as the grand old lady as its over 15 years old and still sounds better than any digital mixer

Matthew,

If it’s a small station and you are looking for something entry level that will do the job, take a look at products like the JK Audio Interloop or Broadcast Host.

Both units will allow you to feed %analog_something% into a console without too much trouble. Balanced audio is a must.

http://www.jkaudio.com/index.html

Cost is somewhere around $500.

The larger tele-hybrid solutions are $5 - $15K.

The smaller solutions are becoming cheaper as many radio studio solutions are now IP based – ie: Wheatstone (http://wheatstone-radio.com/index.php/radio-products/digital-radio-consoles)

HTH

"On topic" is not just about signal/noise, it's about asking the right people the right questions.

  Scott

In fairness if the person asking the question knew enough to know who to ask they wouldn't need a mailing list. As a tangent - this little thread also demonstrates why "reply off list" is a bad idea - if Ben had sent his email directly to Matthew then Peter would have no opportunity to correct the bad advice.
