Hello all

Following the recent discussions about Metadata on the list, I thought it
might be of interest to any AusNoggers in Melbourne next week to attend our
research seminar on Metadata retention.

Because I often get queries about whether the seminar will be recorded, I
have already asked Philip who has graciously agreed to publically release
the seminar recording

Details of the seminar for those who wish to attend in person are below

Regards

Jason

Title: Metadata Retention

Speaker: Dr. Philip Branch

Time: 11:30am, 23rd Apr 2015

Location: AS404, Level 4, AS Building

Abstract:

As a result of government proposals for metadata retention, metadata has
been in the news quite a lot lately. The proposal is that all metadata of
specific types be collected for all communications activity in Australia.
Not surprisingly, this has attracted some controversy.
In this talk I will explain what metadata is, how it can be used in
investigations, what the proposals are, and some of the issues they raise.

Biography:

Philip Branch worked as a software engineer in Tasmania and NSW before
returning to do a Masters at the University of Tasmania and a PhD in
Computer Systems Engineering at Monash which was then followed by a period
working as a Business Analyst for an Internet startup and then as
Development Manager for Lawful Interception products with Ericsson
AsiaPacific Labs. His current research interests are in teletraffic data
analysis, particularly the use of machine learning applied to recognition
of traffic classes for purposes of Lawful Interception and Quality of
Service management.
