I still use them for exactly those reasons - OOB access.
I also use a number of small industrial versions which include 3G, so it 
gives me a completely independant way to access equipment at remote sites.
(And I use them at home where living off-grid means being aware of the 
power consumption of things, and small multiport terminal servers let me 
interface to RS232 devices here but do all the "grunt" work on machines at 
the Datacentre)
