Personally I moved over to RHEL itself as we have a site license here now, but I remember the drama as I was using CentOS at the time when the whole 5.x update vs 6 release happened.

There were some dramas before (after? Not sure on timelines) as well in regards to domain name ownership, etc. etc., it’s fair to say there has been some drama but with RH stepping up and including the project more and more I think it’s a bit harsh to call it a dead distro.

A lot of people declared FC dead after that whole spate of bad releases (cant remember the specific versions, sorry, I think 9-11?) with major bugs and bleeding edge features that were half implemented, RH stepped in, got that ship back on track and it’s going from strength to strength now.

Scientific Linux is a good alternative but they all have their strengths and weaknesses.

Obligatory news link with RH statement about CentOS:

Thanks,
Ayden Beeson

You're still using CentOS? Seriously? 2008, if I recall correctly, the problems started. By 2011 it was effectively a dead distro.
There's other EL distros and better EL distros for your systems. e.g. Scientific.... used by CERN to, in part, support the LHC.

Thats not good for anybody using any CentOS... as this means yum will no longer function unless you have a static yum.repo file configured

I think its time we need an Australian master mirror and mirrorlists :D
