These days I get the impression the politicians don’t represent the people but the party and those that “donate” to the party.  Money talks.

It makes sense to me - an online petition, unless sanctioned, run and reviewed by government department(s), could technically be made up of mostly 'fake' votes, with little effort by a single individual.
