Don't like them, don't think their support is very good... refurb is rare, stock is hard to get, skills are rare, blah blah.

It's not just Extreme, it is any fringe vendor. For the most part I stay away from anyone that doesn't have:

- Recognised brand (in Enterprise, Service Provider and Government)
- Certification framework with good education
- Lots of online support and communities
- Lot of skilled and experienced engineers in the market
- Local presence with good 24/7 TAC and pre-sales engineers
- SmartNet/J-Care equivalent with 8x5xNBD and 24x7x2-4 response - with all capital cities covered
- Refurb market
- A channel approach is preferable
- Strong history
- Respected by a significant part of the network engineer community
- Good spread of models, options, features
- Standard compliant for most common protocols
and I am sure others....

There would have to be a massive compelling reason for me to recommend or voluntarily deploy something which doesn't have most of those.

Brocade I'd consider looking at.

Extreme.. never.

Extreme make a good 10Gb Switch.

X670 (48 ports)
or X670V (48 ports + 4 x 40Gb Module on the back).

Hey all,

Just looking at upgrading some A5820's with A5900's...

Anyone done this and know the differences between COMOS5 and COMOS7? HP say its backwards compatible, but I am wondering if there are any stories - good or bad - out there about doing it.

Also - what do people think in the 10Gb switching space?

- HP A5900 (48 ports)
- Juniper EX4550 (32 ports)
- Cisco 4500-X (32 ports)
- Brocade equivalent?
- Others?

The HP A5800 has 2mb packet buffers, the A5900 is 9mb.. the Cisco 4900 might have around 17mb, but I can't figure out what the Juniper has... nothing is listed here:http://people.ucsc.edu/~warner/buffer.html to even guess with.
