Thanks Greg for raising this and everybody for their contributions so far please do keep the anecdotes coming. About to roll on 6 ourselves and I'll freely admit I had assumed a stateful type behaviour by default on "consumer" grade CPE would prevail. More proof that all assumptions should be tested.
