We needed some 10GbE switching capacity for some storage lab testing we were doing. We didn't want to spend heaps on the test kit so grabbed a couple of Netgear 8 Port 10Gig L2 switches just to punt packets around. The testing involved a 4 node distributed SAN platform with about 20TB of high speed storage all being striped and replicated etc etc etc. I must say the switches performed better than I expected. I think we paid around $800 per switch (i.e. $100 per 10GBase-T port !!!!) so it was certainly a cost effective way to test some storage technology.

A low-cost, L2 only, managed 10GbE switch from a more "data centre centric" vendor would a great addition for stand-alone storage fabrics.

Thanks
