[AusNOG] IP transit via Megaport in Sydney and Melbourne

Hi Skeeve

Im pretty certain that the MegaDirect is only available to wholesale customers or channel partners.

The average Joe connected the MegaPort wouldn’t be able to order this.

Actually, this isn't strictly true. You can get Vocus services over Megaport using the new MegaDirect product.

MegaDirect is a wholesale only service that lets you connect to people who don't have Megaport.

Using Vocus as an example... Megaport is in the Vocus DC, or a place where Vocus provides handoff. You order a MegaDirect service (in 1Gb or 10Gb) to go from the Vocus handoff switch port, directly physically cabled to the Megaport switch, which you can then VxC back to you.

I am about to use this to get to one of the suppliers for a new ISP I am building which are slow to get onto Megaport. The costs for the 1Gb ports are only $200 (12mths) or $250 (6mths) instead of the $500 for the 10Gb ports.

This can be essentially used to connect anyone to your network by using Megaport. You will most likely see some tail providers, like FirstPath and others who will offer tails from an office building, straight into Megaport using MegaDirect.

So, if someone isn't on Megaport, or just not yet... It doesn't really matter anymore as long as Megaport is in the DC itself...

Vocus don’t supply services directly over Megaport so they are out of the equation.

I am after IP transit providers on Megaport who can provide me a direct connection with full routes without the cost of a physical cross connections or burning a router port and without having someone manage a tail like suggested.

For your knowledge I did ask about DDOS as I have had no end of pain liaising with upstream providers previous so I am very interested in DDOS mitigation and attacks.

The Vocus solution which you made reference to is not DDOS mitigation it is DDOS black holing which completes the attack which can be useful but is not DDOS mitigation.

I have to agree with Jared on this. Besides, Andrew didn't even ask about DDoS protection, so why is it even being discussed?

Irrespective, Andrew you should speak to the guys at Vocus as they can no doubt sell you transit at a much lower on cost and they too have DDoS mitigation included in their transit product (if that's something you need). More info at http://www.vocus.com.au/ddos/

Anybody can give you a Megaport lead-in for Vocus in just about every non-PIPE data centre, happy to do it for you ourselves in M1.

It's 32 Gbits? That's nothing to be super excited about? Sounds like a mass marketing ploy on Ausnog again.

Literally myself and many other's get hit with that daily :) Maybe we should all start comparing our '...attacks'

Joel from Zone networks would be in the same boat as us and being smashed with attacks much larger than this launched by script kiddies upset about being booted from their game servers!

Hi Andrew

No worries at all.

We have a load of information about the attack on both of our websites. Went into as much detail as we both could since we know there is quite a bit of interest in these types of things in the network industry.

They can even deliver the DDoS protection to any of your other PoP’s around Australia over Megaport. This is how we have our DDoS protection delivered to our Sydney, Melbourne & Brisbane locations and very soon our Perth location as well.

John thank you for your suggestion.

I have talked with Micron21 previously and they were very knowledgeable I’ll reach out to them for our Melbourne requirements.

What type of DDOS attack was it do you have any more information?

Hi Andrew

For IP transit in Melbourne, definitely contact the guys at Micron21… James responded on here today about his DDoS protection that he’s able to provide both domestically & internationally and they’re also on Megaport as well.

Just this week they successfully soaked & scrubbed a 34.11Gbit attack on our network which really has made having their DDOS protection well worth having!

The guys are always happy to sit down and take the time to have a chat with you and see what you need and setup what you’re looking for. The guys are definitely switched on.

I am after a backup IP transit provider in Sydney and in Melbourne for IP transit delivered over Megaport VCX.

I would want my Melbourne provider to be diverse from my Sydney provider to create some form of redundancy between Melbourne and Sydney, I’ll also require a full routing table.

My question is who is using IP transit over Megaport and who can you recommend, or not recommend ?

Bonus ports for recommending a provider who can provide 95% percentile billing, because this is a backup service I would be looking to commit to as little as possible with a large as possible burst.

Happy to also provide IP transit from Optus as part of an exchange if required,

Andrew
