Apparently that's using them as intended; I've seen old racks where there are depressions between holes where the tabs are supposed to rest.

But up-down only works where there's some space to work in. I doubt the original designers envisaged the rack cramming that we're all used to.

And what's with all the metric and imperial screw/nut sizes? Gah.
