Having experimented with USB OTG to serial and USB OTG to Ethernet myself,
it's a much cleaner solution too.

That and the more advanced functionality as you've pointed out, requires
rooting the phone. I'm assuming this is less likely to occur if you phones
are supplied and managed by your workplace.
