Because many employers require a degree also.

You can debate its value (although I would tend to agree with Chris
Gibbs' & Tim Raphael's comments about the benefits of a degree), but you
don't have much room to debate with an employer when their HR department
stipulates that engineers must hold Bachelor-level qualifications.
