BTW - What you're talking about is totally doable. Basically all lock 
manufacturers use set pin spacing and cut depths. For example, a 5 pin 
Master pin-tumbler key is cut with something like...

0          .280"
1          .265"
2          .250"
3          .235"
4          .220"
5          .205"
6          .190"
7          .175"

... so if you have access to the key and a set of calipers you can just 
measure the cut depth for each pin, write them down and then duplicate 
the key blind without the original.

With a little patience you could conceivably do it with hand tools and a 
vice.
