Notes from Tom:

---

The most interesting meetings are probably going to be in a smoke filled
back room, but some of the IGF sessions are being streamed live from
Nairobi (and Twitter #IGF11):
http://www.intgovforum.org/cms/remote-participation-2011

The ANU has arranged to be a 'remote hub' and anyone in Canberra come
along and watch the event, each day 27 to 30 September:
http://billboard.anu.edu.au/event_view.asp?id=83149

>From 3pm to 4pm there will be local speakers at ANU, followed by the
streaming from 4pm to 7:30pm. Due to the time zone differences only the
morning sessions (Nairobi time) will be shown.

One of Thursday's sessions is on education and I will be giving a
pre-streaming talk on "Education on-line for development":

Hey all,

A pretty important meeting is happening at the IGF (Internet Governance Forum) at the moment with a fight about how the internet itself is managed.

The article below gives a good overview of the situation.

http://news.dot-nxt.com/2011/09/22/internet-governance-fight-looms

The worrying thing is the size and power of some of the countries who want to do things differently than our present multi-stakeholder approach.

As the writer quotes "Nothing less than the fate of the future evolution of the Internet is at stake". It sounds dramatic, but if certain powers get their way, it could be close to the truth.

There are numerous people from our community going to be attending the event in Africa and no doubt will report back to us with what is happening.
