[AusNOG] World IPv6 Day

After the mess with dot notation for 32bit ASes, can we not make this more complex?

If you need memorable IPv6 address for important things then make them short. eg we've made our IPv6 resolver addresses:

2001:44b8:1::1 and 2001:44b8:2::2 (14 chars)

Which, compared to our IPv4 one (192.231.203.132 = 15 chars) is shorter!

Couldn't we just have the libraries that display the address use ASCII instead of hex? That way a 64 bit interface address could represent an arbitrary 8 char string.

eg 2001:db9:4865:6c6c:6f20:576f:726c:6421=> 2001:db9:"Hello World!"

Careful Narelle,

Otherwise soon there will be a proposal for IPv8 which includes support for all of the missing english and non-english characters.

Yikes!

Cheers

That is really clever.

I admit I've been struggling with these Very Big Addresses for a
while, til Skeeve pointed out all I should do is make words! Mind you
we were talking about memorable things like abba.

It's kinda hard when you've got whole IPv4 addressing plans burnt into
your brain...

I'm going to have to keep a note somewhere of favourite ping6 and
traceroute6 destinations for those routine connectivity tests, but
really, we might even be able to remember 2620::1c00:0:face:b00c:0:2
or 2001:420:80:1:c:15c0:d06:f00d !!

Just gorgeous. Truly, What's not to love!!?
