Hi Darren,

>Can anyone tell me if Telstra blocks port 25 SMTP outbound on their 3G
>network for iPhones ?

Can't speak for Telstra, but certainly any ISP doing their job properly will
block port 25 (except to the ISP's own mailserver).

>We have a client who claims Telstra says "the outbound email sending via
>non-Telstra ISP is _not_ blocked for iPhones".

I'd take that statement (if accurate) to mean "we treat iPhone like any
other mail client".

>Our experience is that this is generally blocked for customers wanting
>to send messages via their own ISP (ie: not using Telstra) and that we
>need to configure mail.bigpond or similar as the outgoing SMTP service.

>Happy to hear from others here.

Use port 587 or port 465 (SSL). Both should require the client to supply
username & password (or other authentication) as part of the SMTP dialogue.
