Andrew,

Tim's clients are representitve of the regional users we are attempting to reach with the NBN. Dismissing his anecdotal knowlege in favor of percieved demand and napkin math with little/no visibility of the demographic is foolhardy at best.

Yes, the government often spends a lot of money on projects which benefit only a few - but these are (sanity permitting) for projects which are totally infeasible by a private enterprise.

As I have mentioned before, if organizations require large amounts of connectivity, they should work this into their business model. Rio Tinto did that when they trenched 700km of fibre string across the Nullabour to replace an old microwave network (which replaced an analogue troposcatter tie!).

Justifying wasteful expenditure by pointing out other wasteful expenditure is not a good argument - the rebuttal for which I will refrain, suffice to say that yes, I am concerned about defence/education/gov advertising/etc misspending, but I am not accomplished in the economic models of those fields and therefore am unqualified to comment.

And this is the very problem we all face but, in my opinion, will have to make do with.

While I support the fact that you may very well indeed have clients that don't need a Clydesdale (fibre) there are others that do. But at the same time, there are plenty of things in this country we ALL do t need but we end up paying for it anyway. It's pretty obvious that we all have our own needs but the govt can't make us all happy.

Just because your or your clients don't need something... It doesn't make them any more important than the rest of us. I hate to be blunt but that's just how I see it.

This will very much determine the take up.  Many want the fastest speeds but when it comes to capacity to pay choose other plans. There is not a snow flakes chance in hell that the NBN pricing once the political games are played out will be cheaper than the current ADSL offerings.  It is a major investment and will require a higher price to pay for it.   The danger with NBN is that many won't have the ability to pay which will drive more onto the mobile wireless networks and degrade the quality of service on mobile wireless networks.  Some much for providing solutions for the future.  NBN risks driving demand from the current fixed networks to the mobile networks making even incremental upgrades uneconomic in the fixed network.  The trend of fixed to mobile substitution has been happening for some time.
