Akamai being the most accurate but most expensive (and more encumbered).
Everybody seems interested in geoip this week!

Quova, ip2location and Akamai also do (paid) geoip, and as already
mentioned there is MaxMind's free service as well as paid services.
Quova, MaxMind and IP2L have services where you can download and update
a database for local queries, effectively giving you infinite queries,
while Akamai is over-the-net only and cost scales with bandwidth used.
MaxMind also has a fairly handy over-the-web subscription (its like 20
usd for 50k lookups). I think IP2L have one too but it only resolves
country(their downloaded db service has everything).

From what I hear, Quova is probably the best.

Subject: [AusNOG] GEO IP databases

Hi Everyone,

An application I'm working on at the moment could benefit from some
best-guess GEO lookups based on users current IPs. I'm interested to
know what success people have had with the various products on the
market?

I realise that there will always be errors in the data set, it's
impossible to tie down every IP.

For my purpose I'm just trying to save most people a little time by
auto-populating a state selector and maybe guessing a region or city.
False hits are not the end of the world.

I'd like to hear any suggestions on services people have consumed (data
sets, web services). And maybe you have a horror story everyone would be
interested in.

Thanks in advance,
Daniel
