Should put in my resume - as much as I'd hate to be hated, those pay cheques would not go astray ;)

In all seriousness though, I hope his family is well - it is a testament to his character that he would put one of the highest profile corporate positions in Australia aside for his family. I would like to think that everybody would do the same, but sadly sometimes is not the case.

Well wishes from this side of the fence, at the very least.

BREAKING NEWS

Dr Phil Burgess resigns

Telstra's Dr Phil Burgess will leave his position as Telstra's public policy chief at the end of August to return to the United States.

Telstra said this afternoon that Dr Burgess will return to his home in Annapolis, Maryland, in early September to "support his wife, Mary Sue, whose mother is seriously ill, and to resume his life as an advisor to business and government on matters related to technology and society, a life he put on hold to join Sol Trujillo and Telstra three years ago."

Dr Burgess has been Group Managing Director, Public Policy & Communications, since July 2005.

CEO Sol Trujillo announced today that Burgess would be replaced by David Quilty, the company's government relations director, who joined the company in early 2006 after serving in various government advisory positions.

More details in CommsDay tomorrow.
